The IACUC process aims to ensure the appropriate use of animals and the welfare of animals in use, as well as the safety of the individuals responsible for the husbandry, use and oversight of the animals. The general procedures for submission, review and approval of documents submitted to the IACUC are indicated in the table below.
If you have any questions, please contact IACUC Administration at iacuc@uwosh.edu or by calling (920)-424-3215.
Protocol submissions can be sent electronically to IACUC@uwosh.edu using the appropriate IACUC Form:
1. IACUC Laboratory Research Application (animals housed within animal care facilities), or
2. IACUC Field Research Application (research in the field involving animal handling or manipulation or natural environment), or
3. IACUC Field Study Exemption Application (field studies involving observation of animals only)
IACUC Administration performs an initial review of the application and supporting documents to confirm that the application is complete.
If a pre-read is requested, the protocol will be read by the IACUC Chair, IACUC Administrator, campus veterinarian, or a combination of the above people. Reviewers may suggest revisions to the application or supporting documents and will notify the PI of these recommendations. The PI can revise the application and send it back to IACUC@uwosh.edu If the PI does not request a pre-read then this step is not performed.
The protocol is then either placed on the agenda for the next Full Committee meeting of the IACUC or is sent through Designated Member Review process (Note: Type of review is dependent on type of animal use and the associated amount/level of pain and/or distress). The IACUC may choose to review any submission through Full Committee).
Please allow the following approximate times for protocol reviews:
Designated Member Reviews: 2-4 weeks (longer if revisions are requested during review)
Full Committee Reviews: 3-6 weeks
When your project is approved, you will receive an approval letter from the IACUC. Your project may commence. Please note any pending items that may be listed on the approval letter. IACUC projects are valid for a period of three years from the approval date.

If changes to your research project are requested, the PI can submit an IACUC Modification Request Form, IACUC Veterinary Verification and Consultation Form, IACUC Research Personnel Addition Form and the IACUC Animal Number Increase Request Form. The type of modification request form will depend on the type of study change needed. See the IACUC Process Overview tab above to determine which form to submit. IACUC approval of the modification is required before the changes to your protocol can be implemented.
Modification forms can be found under the IACUC Forms tab.
Researchers (PIs) must close out their IACUC pr oject once the research project is complete. The IACUC office sends out an expiration notice prior to the protocol expiration date. A project may be closed upon completion by submitting an IACUC Project Summary Form to iacuc@uwosh.edu.
Any unexpected event or problem that has the potential to adversely affect animal health and/or well-being must be reported to the IACUC within 72 hours. Unexpected events are reported using the Unexpected Event or Problem Report .
Research Collaborations: The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, 8th Edition , states that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) , contract or other agreement should “address the responsibility for offsite animal care and use, animal ownership and IACUC review and oversight for animal research collaborations . Please reach out to the IACUC if you will be collaborating with another institution to initiate the process for establishing a collaborative research agreement : IACUC@uwosh.edu .
If you wish to have a non-affiliated person (not associated with an institution of higher education) collaborate on a UW Oshkosh led project involving vertebrate animals , please contact the HR Office and notify them that you wish to hire volunteer research personnel.
Download and complete the two required forms below:
Return these documents to the HR Office.
HR will follow up with all parties (supervisor, volunteer, etc.) involved and will determine if a criminal background check is necessary.
If the volunteer needs driver authorization, contact the Parking Office at 920-424-4455, visit: https://www.uwosh.edu/riskmanagement/driver-authorization-management
